About SocialWell Taxonomies

A taxonomy provides organizations with a structured way to define, organize, and describe their business concepts, processes, and data, while identifying relationships between them. Large organizations and digital platforms—including e-commerce systems, electronic health records, digital publishing platforms, and knowledge management systems—have long relied on taxonomies to improve information retrieval, ensure consistent data representation, and enable interoperability across applications.

As organizations increasingly adopt semantic search, knowledge graphs, and artificial intelligence (AI), well-designed taxonomies have become a critical foundation for connecting data with meaningful context. They enable AI-powered search, chatbots, and intelligent agents to understand concepts consistently, improve information discovery, and generate more relevant and accurate responses.

SocialWell Taxonomies is powered by the open-source Skosmos platform and provides controlled vocabularies used across SocialWell's digital solutions. Some vocabularies are shared across multiple applications—for example, Locations, which provides a common geographic hierarchy used throughout the platform ecosystem—while others are domain-specific.

CAPIBuilder

CAPIBuilder is a visual form builder for Open Data Kit (ODK) used for digital data collection. ODK forms are defined using XML-based form schemas. CAPIBuilder integrates controlled vocabularies so that users can search for and select standardized concepts when defining form fields, improving data quality, consistency, and interoperability across surveys and information systems.

NGOMIS

NGOMIS is an information platform for discovering funding opportunities, building partnerships, and showcasing impact across international development, social impact, and government advisory sectors. NGOMIS vocabularies organize concepts related to funding, organizations, thematic sectors, geographic coverage, Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and other metadata that support semantic search and AI-powered discovery.

FPOSoft

FPOSoft supports Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs) and small and medium enterprises by generating business plans, market intelligence, and enterprise development insights. FPOSoft vocabularies standardize concepts related to agriculture, value chains, commodities, financial services, markets, and enterprise development.

For Platform Users

SocialWell Taxonomies is designed to support multiple organizations and domains. Organizations can create and maintain their own controlled vocabularies, taxonomies, and thesauri while reusing common concepts such as locations, administrative boundaries, and internationally recognized classifications. These vocabularies can be integrated into data collection platforms, analytics solutions, semantic search, knowledge graphs, and AI applications through open standards and APIs, enabling consistent data management and interoperability across systems.
